9 The Mole

Overview

Objectives

  • Define the mole and explain how the numerical value of the mole was determined.
  • Convert between grams and moles using molar mass.
  • Convert between moles and number of molecules using Avogadro's number.
  • Determine percent composition of a compound.
  • Determine empirical and molecular formulae.

Academic Standards


C.1.16 Calculate percent composition by mass of a compound or mixture when given the formula.  Determine the empirical and/or molecular formula from experimental data.
